Taping Knife FAQs

What do you use a taping knife for?

A taping knife is used to spread joint compound (‘mud’) into drywall joints, then layer tape over the top of it, followed by another layer of mud. The taping knife ensures a smooth finish.

What size taping knife for drywall?

Different sized taping knives serve different purposes. Smaller knives (6 inches or smaller) are used at the start of the project to fill small holes and crevices. Medium to large sized knives (larger than 6 inches) are better for finishing the job as they cover a larger surface area and allow for a gentle touch.
