Famous People Who Have Been in Plastering

Now, we all know that there are some shining stars in our industry. Those who can turn a basic job into a work of art. But, did you know that there are some mega famous faces who started out in our great profession?

When you take a look at the names of some of the famous people who have been in plastering, you might be surprised at just how well known they are. There are even a couple of knighthoods in there! So, can you imagine these iconic celebs with a hawk and trowel in hand?

Here’s our list!

  • Frank Sinatra – possibly the most famous face on the list and arguably one of the most famous Hollywood stars of all time. Before he did things his way, back in the 1930s he was a plasterer’s assistant and in fact his first wife Nancy (Sinatra), was the daughter of a plasterer too.
  • Sir Thomas Sean Connery – yet again another iconic celeb that you’re bound to recognise. These days we know him as possibly the best James Bond ever, but, back in his day, Sean and his younger brother Neil used to work as plastering contractors in Scotland’s fine capital Edinburgh. (Can imagine there were one or two happy housewives needing some plastering done around the time!)
  • Sir Henry Cooper – legend has it that this big time heavyweight boxer used to keep in shape for his fights by joining his twin brother on plastering jobs!
  • Alan Minter – Sir Henry wasn’t the only boxer keeping his physique honed through plastering – this former world middleweight champ was a plasterer too.
  • Brian Blessed – known more for his loud booming voice and tremendous acting talent than his ability to skim, but believe it or not, plastering is one of his many hidden talents.
  • Ricky Tomlinson – the Royle Family regular is quite well known for his political activism and the stint in prison that followed in his early life, but at the time he was also working as a plasterer on building sites.
  • Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards – who could forget this Olympic gold medal winning ski jumper from the eighties? He was also a plasterer by trade.

Don’t forget you can order your tools online!

If you fancy joining such a star studded line up with a career in plastering, or, if you’re already one of the industry’s leading lights and need to update your tools to fit, don’t forget you can order your tools online with us!

The history of taping tools

The history of taping tools

It’s easy to see why so many Taping & Jointing professionals and DIY enthusiasts are fans of the automatic taping tool.

The history of taping tools has seen some excellent developments, with tools being constantly created and improved – so much so that the job can now be done quicker, more flawlessly and with much more impressive results for those wanting the work done.

When you use automatic taping tools, as opposed to hand tools, your finishing will benefit from the greater speed, quality and finish, which makes automatic taping tools incredibly popular within the Taping & Jointing Industry.

A brief history

The first drywall taping tools came to life in 1939, in Georgia, USA, when painting and plastering brothers Robert and Stan Ames were trying out new ways to finish drywall.

Their first invention was the Corner Shoe which applied joint compound to the seams using simply air pressure and a long hose. The Ames brothers later went on to bring out an early version of the Bazooka in 1945, which, weighing more than 100lbs, was a lot heavier going than the lightweight taping tools that are around today.

As the world moved away from wartime, the first drywall boxes and nail spotters were created in 1951 and in 1954 the automatic taper was invented by Robert Ames.

The brothers then went on to sell their company in 1962 to Illinois based Bliss and Laughlin Industries for a whopping $5.2 million dollars and it was renamed Axia Incorporated in 1982.

In the early 1960s, many of the patents that were filed by the Ames brothers were starting to expire and other plastering tool manufacturers were beginning to be able to create versions of their own, which meant that some big competition was able to enter the marketplace.

As a result, not only was the job made easier for drywallers, but there was much greater choice and more pressure on the tool makers to continue to improve and develop things by creating something that was more and more effective each time.

The benefits of taping tools

As time progresses, Dryliners and DIY enthusiasts have seen some leaps forward in the kind of equipment they can use to get the job done consistently better. And there are many reasons why people would prefer to use an automatic taping tool, in no small part down to the more flawless finish that they can achieve. Here are a few more:

  • Just the right amount of compound used, less wastage – and as a result, no sanding it all off at the end because you’ve used too much.
  • Safer – Because the tools can reach up high into the hard to reach places which reduces the need for ladders and stilts that can lead to accidents.
  • Get the job done quicker – not only do you get to apply the compound and tape to a joint at the same time, you can finish both sides of a corner, meaning no more waiting around during drying times.
  • Money saved – taking into consideration the initial cost of an automatic taping tool, this is soon outweighed by the better results achieved and time saved.

Thinking of becoming a dry liner?

The dry lining industry is an interesting one thanks to the many skills and techniques there are to learn, as well as the different career paths you can take if you particularly like a certain element of the industry.

If you’re thinking of becoming a dry liner, there are some great benefits to doing the work, including the satisfaction of seeing new building plans come to fruition and the opportunity to create new spaces, by dividing larger areas into smaller rooms and walkways.

drylining-project

The job is a valuable one within the construction industry, as a certain level of skill is required and it can be fundamental to a project’s completion.

What does a dry liner do?

The general work of a plasterer involves applying all kinds of plaster to walls and ceilings to get them up to scratch for decorating purposes. You could find yourself working in solid plastering, fibrous plastering or dry lining. If dry lining is a fairly new concept to you and you’re wondering what does a dry liner do, then, when you find yourself in a newly built house, just knock on some of the internal walls and you’ll find a good example of what they do.

It’s the dry liner’s job to put up internal walls in commercial properties of all kinds and domestic dwellings, using metal stud partitioning and plasterboard panels. They can also create space for insulation, install removable wall partitions, suspended ceilings and raised flooring and hide visible pipes and wiring.

There are two stages of drylining – fixing and finishing. You’ll need to be able to measure out and cut plasterboard to the right size and there’s also an element of sealing and taping the joints, once the plasterboard is in place, then sanding down the area ready for painting and decorating.

dryliner at work

Useful information on drylining courses

In a similar way to other plastering jobs, some of the skills you will need to carry out this practical job are good numeracy skills, the ability to work as a team, a decent level of fitness (because of the lifting and moving of the panels) and the ability to read technical diagrams. But, when it comes to learning how to do it, you can become a dryliner’s mate and figure it out on the job, take a college course to learn the skills, or do both.

While there are no set qualifications needed to become a dryliner, there is a range of college courses and apprenticeships that you can find and do through organisations such as the CITB and National Careers Service, City and Guilds which should help you learn the skills you might need.

If you’re going in the trade get the right kit!

And, if learning about drylining and becoming a dry liner sounds like an appealing prospect to you, then you also might want to give yourself the best possible start by getting set up with a good piece of kit.

At Gypsumtools we stock a range of professional drylining tools and taping kits which will help make things a little easier while you learn the trade.

You can take a browse through our products online, or give us a call to find out more.

What plastering qualifications are there?

If you are interested in a career in plastering then you’ve made a great choice. There are some excellent opportunities for plasterers in the UK, whether you want to work for a specialist plastering firm, building contractors, or you’d like to be self employed or whether you want intensive plastering courses, weekend plastering courses or even plastering night courses!

As with many trades and industries there’s an awful lot to be said for getting yourself some onsite experience, so, taking the opportunity to be a plasterer’s mate or labourer will give you a good chance to find out what it’s all about.

Young apprentice with professional plasterer

There are also ways to learn the skills needed through an apprenticeship or college course and you’ll find plenty out there to choose from.

While many plastering firms are looking for on the job experience above all, if you’re wondering what plastering qualifications are there, then finding a good course can be a great chance to get taught by the experts and give you an excellent place to start honing your skills.

You can also have plastering training while you’re on a job with a day or block release.

Are you thinking of a plastering career?

If you are thinking of a plastering career this can include working in solid plastering, fibrous plastering or drylining. It can also mean working indoors or outdoors on all manner of buildings or sites, from large commercial developments all the way through to small scale private homes and extensions.

Useful skills include the ability to work accurately and as a part of a team, having good numeric skills for calculating surface areas and the amount of plaster needed, as well as a certain level of fitness and creative ability too.

As you will discover, there’s lots of diversity in plastering, with different routes to take in the job and lots of techniques and skills to get your head around, so having a good idea of where you want your career to take you to start with can be useful.

Useful information on plastering courses – Plastering Courses near me

Plastering training is available through several types of college course, which you can find via organisations such as City and Guilds, CITB, bConstructive and the National Careers Service.

city-guilds-plasteringcitb logo

The variety of courses can allow you to progress from beginner level plastering all the way through to advanced master craftsman territory as you move from basic construction, building and plastering skills, all the way through to level three diplomas in plastering and construction crafts.

City and Guilds plastering courses are incredibly popular especially the City and Guilds Plastering Level 2 which you can find a link to above.

Skills you can learn on the way include modules on technical information and quantities, applying plastering materials and render to indoor and outdoor surfaces, producing plasterwork components from moulds and installing components.

If you’re going in the trade, get the right kit!

At Gypsumtools we have been providing plastering tools and equipment for a wide range of plastering purposes for many years.

While our range of products will cater for DIY fans all the way through to the professional plasterer, if you’re looking to start out in the industry, you should take a look at our apprentice kits which will provide you with everything you need to get going.
